Community Development Awards - 2010 Nominees

The First Annual Rancho Bernardo Meritorious Design Award is to recognize those projects that have had a positive impact on our community. These projects have enhanced the character of Rancho Bernardo through design, reconstruction or landscaping. As the Rancho Bernardo Community has matured it is now entering the phase of renovating itself. All the projects presented here for nomination have been built to replace existing structures. As such, they represent and reflect the community’s interest in not only maintaining the sense of what Rancho Bernardo was and is, but what it will become.

Description of Nominees:

1. Corporate Building: THE SONY BUILDING

The Sony Building is Rancho Bernardo’s first midrise structure. It is also our first national corporate headquarters.

The building is a modern structure that has a multifaceted, articulated exterior with differentiated material that allows it to feel more intimate than a traditional building of its size. It has an excellent entrance that welcomes people in. The building along with its’ adjoining parking structure and surrounding landscaping allow it to fit in well within the industrial park. The building does not dominate the Rancho Bernardo skyline, affording people varying views but at no point hovers over the community.

2. Commercial Building: THE ARCO GAS STATION

The ARCO Gas Station replaced the existing gas station which had been a fixture in Rancho Bernardo for years.

The new building and site was designed to allow increased site utilization while also resolving the traffic flow issues of the old site. The building and gas pump canopy has tile roofing to blend in with the area buildings. Stone veneer elements were added to the building and canopy columns to soften and enhance the elevations. Unlike many gas stations and mini-marts the owners opted to eliminate the multiply signage and banners to reflect the upscale nature of the community.

3. Office Building: THE PRUDENTIAL REAL ESTATE BUILDING

This building replaced the old Rancho Bernardo Sales office which had been here since the beginning of the community.

The new building is on the signature corner of our community. It is designed with an understated early California design. The building is sited so as to not overwhelm the corner. The open courtyard is welcoming and presents a nice landscaped vista, complete with water fountain, upon entering Rancho Bernardo. It is an excellent example for future office renovation.

4. Residential: PRIVATE RESIDENCE

This home replaces a house lost in the Witch Creek fires.

The house uses innovative construction techniques which are unique in our area. The building is constructed with concrete placed in foam cells. This allows the building to achieve greater fire resistance, increased energy efficiency and is a more green structure. This focus on non-traditional construction methods allows the building to help achieve the mentioned goals while also providing the owners with an attractive and functional residence.

5. Landscaping: STREET LANDSCAPING PROJECT

This project is located on the east side of Pomerado Road, south of Rancho Bernardo Road.

For years this area was a local eye sore, with views of the drainage canal through an old chain link fence. Through community effort, the office of our former councilman and the City of San Diego this area was visually enhanced through a very attractive street landscaping project.
